As an educator, how can you determine if a student might benefit from assistive technology (AT)? Which AT devices or services might best meet the student's needs? How can you integrate AT into your classroom and lesson plans? And, how will you know if AT helps the student make progress?
The answers to these questions will emerge as you progress through the AT Cycle which is based on current policy and built upon years of fieldwork, evaluation, and research in assistive technology. Developed at Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education, the AT Cycle includes four iterative phases—
- Consider AT
- Choose and Trial AT
- Implement AT
- Monitor Progress
Regardless of the phase, the student's needs remain the focus of all efforts to improve performance, increase achievement, and foster independence.
The AT Cycle grew from the collective wisdom of educators, researchers, special education service providers, and others. These expert voices from across the nation will help increase your understanding and use of AT. Each phase of the cycle includes a description of how and when to use it, frequently asked questions, an example of the AT Cycle in practice, and a planning guide. Try the AT Cycle so all your students will succeed. |
